DON'T LET MAKEUP BECOME BACTERIA BREEDING GROUND Everyone knows that eye infections can be caused by sharing eye cosmetics, but did you know that bacteria develops in your eye makeup over time from exposure to moisture and air? Take mascara, for instance: Each application introduces bacteria not only from the wand, but pushes it inside the tube. As you push the wand inside the tube, you increase the amount of air, which creates a breeding ground for bacteria. From the moment the makeup is opened, this cycle begins. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that powders and eye shadows be discarded after two years and eyeliner, lip liner, lipstick, concealer and foundations be replaced after 1 year. Mascara has the shortest shelf life of all makeup – dermatologists suggest discarding within three months. Also, pay attention to your applicators, such as brushes and sponges, which can harbor unsafe bacteria. Brushes and sponges should be washed with mild soap every week, and disposable applicators should be discarded within one month. The Food and Drug Administration cautions us to be wary of natural products, which have a quicker expiration date. Natural ingredients are more likely to become breeding grounds for microbes. Here are a few steps you can take to prevent makeup from spoiling. One way is to keep cosmetics out of the sun and heat, such as your car, which can kill the preservatives that fight off bacteria. Another way is to make sure all products are tightly sealed. Properly sealed containers protect your cosmetics from damp environments and airborne microbes, which dwell in humid locales such as your bathroom. Keeping your makeup out of the bathroom altogether can also extend shelf life. Never add water or saliva to your products. Liquid increases the bacteria content of your products.

CONDUCTIVE KERATOPLASTY (CK) Conductive Keratoplasty is a relatively new procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to shrink collagen tissue within the cornea to treat low to moderate farsightedness and presbyopia. Using a controlled release of radiofrequency energy into the stroma (the third layer of cornea), the temperature of the corneal tissue is increased, which makes the cornea steeper and increases its focusing power. CK makes the cornea steeper and increases its focusing power CK IS FOR THOSE WHO: •want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses, reading glasses or contacts •have difficulty with close vision •are at least 40 years of age •have not had a significant change in their vision for one year •have no health issues affecting their eyes •have not had previous vision correction surgery •are not pregnant or nursing

PILOTS PERMITTED TO USE MULTIFOCAL CONTACT LENSES Earlier this year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced a new policy that permits binocular pilots to wear FDA-approved multifocal contact lenses if specific conditions are met. A one-month adaptation period in the lenses is requisite prior to their aviation medical exam, along with specific visual acuity levels for distance, intermediate and near distances. The pilots’ treating eye specialist must also complete this form. Full details are available by clicking here: http://www.faa.gov/

  • WARNING: UV-absorbing contact lenses are NOT substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as UV-absorbing goggles or sunglasses, because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area. You should continue to use UV-absorbing eyewear as directed. NOTE: Long-term exposure to UV radiation is one of the risk factors associated with cataracts. Exposure is based on a number of factors such as environmental conditions (altitude, geography, cloud cover) and personal factors (extent and nature of outdoor activities). UV-Blocking contact lenses help provide protection against harmful UV radiation. However, clinical studies have not been done to demonstrate that wearing UV-Blocking contact lenses reduces the risk of developing cataracts or other eye disorders.
