DON'T LET MAKEUP BECOME BACTERIA BREEDING GROUND
Everyone knows that eye infections can be caused by sharing eye cosmetics, but did you know that bacteria develops in your eye makeup over time from exposure to moisture and air? Take mascara, for instance: Each application introduces bacteria not only from the wand, but pushes it inside the tube. As you push the wand inside the tube, you increase the amount of air, which creates a breeding ground for bacteria. From the moment the makeup is opened, this cycle begins. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that powders and eye shadows be discarded after two years and eyeliner, lip liner, lipstick, concealer and foundations be replaced after 1 year. |
Mascara has the shortest shelf life of all makeup dermatologists suggest discarding within three months. Also, pay attention to your applicators, such as brushes and sponges, which can harbor unsafe bacteria. Brushes and sponges should be washed with mild soap every week, and disposable applicators should be discarded within one month.
The Food and Drug Administration cautions us to be wary of natural products, which have a quicker expiration date. Natural ingredients are more likely to become breeding grounds for microbes.
Here are a few steps you can take to prevent makeup from spoiling. One way is to keep cosmetics out of the sun and heat, such as your car, which can kill the preservatives that fight off bacteria. Another way is to make sure all products are tightly sealed. Properly sealed containers protect your cosmetics from damp environments and airborne microbes, which dwell in humid locales such as your bathroom. Keeping your makeup out of the bathroom altogether can also extend shelf life.
Never add water or saliva to your products. Liquid increases the bacteria content of your products.

CONDUCTIVE KERATOPLASTY (CK)
Conductive Keratoplasty is a relatively new procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to shrink collagen tissue within the cornea to treat low to moderate farsightedness and presbyopia.
Using a controlled release of radiofrequency energy into the stroma (the third layer of cornea), the temperature of the corneal tissue is increased, which makes the cornea steeper and increases its focusing power.
CK makes the cornea steeper
and increases its focusing power
CK IS FOR THOSE WHO:
want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses, reading glasses or contacts
have difficulty with close vision
are at least 40 years of age
have not had a significant change in their vision for one year
have no health issues affecting their eyes
have not had previous vision correction surgery
are not pregnant or nursing

PILOTS PERMITTED TO USE MULTIFOCAL CONTACT LENSES Earlier this year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced a new policy that permits binocular pilots to wear FDA-approved multifocal contact lenses if specific conditions are met. A one-month adaptation period in the lenses is requisite prior to their aviation medical exam, along with specific visual acuity levels for distance, intermediate and near distances. The pilots' treating eye specialist must also complete this form. Full details are available by clicking here: http://www.faa.gov/

UV PROTECTION - Consumer research has shown that UV protection is an important lens attribute for patients. In fact, 3 of 4 patients report that they want UV protection from their contact lenses, and 1 of 2 say they would switch brands for UV protection.
Since 1997, ACUVUE Brand Contact Lenses have led the way in UV blocking. All ACUVUE Brand Contact Lenses are FDA approved to help provide protection against transmission of harmful UV radiation to the cornea and into the eye.WARNING: UV-absorbing contact lenses are NOT substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as UV-absorbing goggles or sunglasses, because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area. You should continue to use UV-absorbing eyewear as directed. NOTE: Long-term exposure to UV radiation is one of the risk factors associated with cataracts. Exposure is based on a number of factors such as environmental conditions (altitude, geography, cloud cover) and personal factors (extent and nature of outdoor activities). UV-Blocking contact lenses help provide protection against harmful UV radiation. However, clinical studies have not been done to demonstrate that wearing UV-Blocking contact lenses reduces the risk of developing cataracts or other eye disorders.

PROTECTIVE SPORTS EYEWARE
Each year, hospital emergency rooms treat more than 40,000 victims of sports eye injuries. Athletes of all ages must wear sports eyeguards.
Prescription glasses, sunglasses, and even safety glasses don't provide adequate protection.
Eye guards should be purchased from your family eye doctor, who offers a wider variety of quality protective eyewear. Check the packaging to see if the eye protector you select has been tested for sports use.
Also check to see that it is made of polycarbonate material, the most impact resistant. Make sure the device is padded around your brow and bridge of your nose, to prevent the eyeguard from cutting your skin. And make sure it is the right size.
For baseball and lacrosse, athletes should wear a helmet with a polycarbonate face mask or wire shield. Sports goggles with polycarbonate lenses and side shields should be worn when participating in racquetball, tennis, and soccer. With the help of your family eye doctor, choose goggles that have been approved by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) or pass the CSA racquet sport standard.
Even those who wear prescription glasses can ask their family eye doctors to fit them with prescription eyeguards.
FIREWORKS
Fourth of July is one of our nation's most festive holidays, but it is also one of our most dangerous. Each year, nearly 13,000 people are blinded, maimed, or killed from fireworks. More than half are children.
Do not allow children to ignite fireworks or stand near others who are doing so. All fireworks are potentially dangerous for children of any age.
Nearly all communities offer some kind of public fireworks display and most are free. Leave the pyrotechnics to the professionals and save money, too.
Play it safe and make sure that you and your family enjoy your holiday celebrations for years to come.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL EYE EXAMS
More than 12 million school-age children, or 1 in 4, have impaired vision. Among younger children, about 1 in 20 has a vision problem that can cause permanent loss of sight if not treated. In addition, thousands of children have such conditions as "lazy eye" and "crossed eyes," as well as more serious eye problems. Yet, more than 80 percent of school children have never had an eye exam.
It's vitally important that children have regular visits to their family eye doctor for a checkup to make sure that their vision is not
impaired and that they have no eye diseases. We all want our children to be able to reach their full potential and your eye doctor
is an important partner in reaching that goal.
Back-to-school time is a good time to make that appointment.
